Akkineni Nageswara Rao Garu is No more




Legendary Telugu actor 'Nata Samrat' Akkineni Nageswara Rao Garu passed away in Care Hospitals around 2.45 AM.  ANR was born on September 20, 1923 in Venkata Raghavapuram in Krishna District. The 91-year-old legendary actor was suffering from cancer. In fact, he had explained about his health condition by calling a press conference.

The legendary actor has acted in  256 films in Telugu and Tamil languages. Currently ANR was shooting for 'Manam' with his son Nagarjuna and grandson Naga Chaitanya. ANR acted in 26 Tamil films and in one Hindi film.

ANR debuted into films in 1941 with movie titled 'Dharma Patni' at the age of 17. Though he started with a female role, he went on to become the matinee idol of Telugu cinema comparable only with NT Rama Rao. He acted in mythological, folk, social and socio-fantasy films and many of them were out and out hits.

Keelu Gurram (1949), Laila Majnu (1949), Samsaram (1950), Mayala Marati (1951), Kanna talli (1953), Devadasu (1953), Vipranarayana (1954), Missamma (1955), Rojulu Marayi (1955), Anarkali (1955), Tenali Ramakrishna (1956), Maya Bazar (1957), Suvarna Sundari (1957), Chenchu Lakshmi (1958), Mangalya Balam (1959), Velugu Needalu (1961), Aradhana (1962), Manchi Manasulu (1962), Gundamma Katha (1962),  Sri Krishnarjuna Yuddham (1963), Atma Balam (1964), Mooga Manasulu (1964), Sumangali (1965), Navaratri (1966), Prem Nagar (1971), Bhakta Tukaram (1973),  Raja Ramesh (1977), Pilla Jamindaru (1980), Premabhishekam (1981), Megha Sandesham (1982), Amara Jeevi (1983), Ravu Garillu(1988), Sutradharulu (1990), Sitarmayyagari Manumaralu (1991), Mechanic Alludu (1993),  Sri Rama Dasu(2006), Sri Rama Rajyam (2011) are some of the films in which he had played the lead role over the last few decades.

He was part of a film currently in shooting with the title 'Manam'. The film also features Nagarjuna, a film star in his own right and grandson Naga Chaitanya. Another grandson of ANR, Akhil is getting ready to enter filmdom.

Nageshwar Rao had several times expressed his desire to "go on acting till his least breath". His wish was in a way fulfillled.
ANR received Raghupati Venkaiaha award in 1989, Dada Saheb Phalke award in 1991. He was presented the NTR National award in 1995. He received Padma Bhushan from Government of India in 1988. He was conferred Padma Vibhushan in 2011. He received Filmfare awards four times. He received two Nandi Awards, first for Megha Sandesham in 1982 and for Bangaru Kutumbam in 1994.

The mortal remains of ANR have been shifted to Annapurna Studios at 9.30 am and a host of political and film personalities paid their last repects to the departeed soul.

Entire film fraternity and his fans across the state are mourning his death.
